Get ready for an exciting new chapter in WorldSBK! Alvaro Bautista's debut with Barni Ducati marks a fresh start for the 2026 season.
In a highly anticipated event in Italy, Barni Ducati unveiled their new colors and star rider, Bautista, for the first time. After years of a predominantly black livery, the team has embraced a bolder red design, making their bikes stand out on the track.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bautista, a two-time World Superbike Champion, joins Barni after four seasons with the factory Ducati team, where he was consistently outperformed by Nicolo Bulega in the past two campaigns. Partnering with Yari Montella, the 2024 Supersport bronze medallist, Bautista aims to break his winless streak since the 2024 Dutch Round and challenge Bulega for the title this year.
The key to Bautista's success lies in finding a consistent feel on the bike, something he's struggled with since the introduction of the combined rider-bike minimum weight in 2024. And this is the part most people miss... all Ducati riders, including Bautista, will have to adapt to a new bike this year. The Bologna factory has introduced a new homologation of the Panigale V4 R, featuring engine and chassis updates, improved aerodynamics, and a double-sided swingarm.
Bautista and his fellow satellite Ducati riders face an immediate challenge in adapting to the new bike. While Bulega and Iker Lecuona had the advantage of testing the 2026 bike at the post-season test in Jerez last October, the satellite riders haven't ridden a WorldSBK-spec machine since the 2025 season finale. However, Bautista did get a chance to test the 2026 bike at Aragon last summer, and Montella also had a test on the new bike last year.
So, will Bautista's experience and talent be enough to overcome the challenges of adapting to a new bike and a new team? Can he reclaim his winning form and challenge Bulega for the title? Join the conversation in the comments and share your thoughts on this exciting new era in WorldSBK!
