The 2026 Australian Open is set to be a pivotal moment for Daria Kasatkina, who recently expressed that she can finally feel a sense of relief as she prepares for her inaugural tournament on home soil. After obtaining Australian citizenship, the Russian-born athlete has transitioned from competing as a neutral player since the onset of Russia's invasion of Ukraine back in 2022.
Now at the age of 28, Kasatkina has not returned to her homeland since publicly coming out as gay the same year, and she has candidly referred to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine as a "nightmare." "At last, I can breathe freely. I’m able to live my life and focus on my career without being burdened by things beyond my control," reflected the former world number eight.
Reflecting on the previous season, Kasatkina described it as exceptionally challenging, admitting that she felt trapped in a metaphorical hole. Last year, she made the difficult decision to end her season prematurely, revealing in October that she was nearing her emotional limits.
As she gears up for her first match against Czech teenager Nikola Bartunkova, Kasatkina—now the second-ranked Australian player—anticipates receiving overwhelming support from the crowd in Melbourne. "This will be my first opportunity to perform in front of such a large home audience, which makes it all the more special," she noted.
"I need to control my nerves, as this situation is completely new for me. However, this pressure feels positive, and I'd much prefer it over the difficulties I've faced in recent years. Playing in a home Grand Slam is an extraordinary milestone in my life."
Meanwhile, Kasatkina’s friend and fellow former compatriot, Mirra Andreeva, has emerged as the leading women's player from Russia at this time.
