Billingham Boxing Academy: Fighting for a New Home (2026)

Billingham Boxing Club's Future Hangs in the Balance: A Tale of Red Tape and Community Resilience

A boxing club in Billingham, England, faces an uncertain future as it battles red tape and a lack of council support.

The Billingham Boxing Academy (BBA) has been a beacon of hope for the community, offering a safe haven for teenagers and adults from the 'poorest postcodes' in the area. Since 2019, the BBA has worked tirelessly to engage with the police and tackle knife crime, providing a much-needed outlet for young people. But now, the club's very existence is at stake.

The BBA's current building, located in the heart of Billingham town center, is in a 'terrible condition' and due for demolition as part of a redevelopment plan. The club has secured a lease for a new premises, but the lack of council support has left it stranded in limbo. The Stockton Council has been negotiating with the building's owners, Sheet Anchor Evolve, for a partial acquisition, but the process has been slow and frustrating for the BBA.

'We are training out of a building which has got leaks all over it and it has not had any work done since pre-Covid because it was due to be demolished,' said Adrian Worth, the founder of the BBA. 'The conditions are absolutely terrible.'

The BBA needs funding to help furnish the new building and move the club, but the council has been unable to provide financial support until the deal is completed. This has left the BBA in a state of uncertainty, with its future hanging in the balance.

'We are aware that a suitable property has been identified for the relocation of Billingham Boxing Academy, this property is not council-owned,' said Lisa Evans, the council leader. 'As the businesses are Sheet Anchor Evolve's tenant, until funding agreements between the council and Sheet Anchor Evolve are signed, the council cannot formalise any funding to enable relocation to take place.'

The BBA's story is a powerful reminder of the challenges faced by community organizations in navigating red tape and the importance of local support. As the BBA continues to fight for its future, it remains to be seen whether the council will step up and provide the necessary support to keep this vital community resource alive. But here's where it gets controversial... What do you think? Should the council be doing more to support community organizations like the BBA? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
