High Wycombe: Lives and homes under threat as firefighters battle out of control bushfire in City of Kalamunda
The bushfire, first reported around 2.05 pm, is moving in an easterly direction and has not been contained or controlled. Residents in parts of Perth's east, particularly those bound by Brand Road, Sultana Road, and Roe Highway in High Wycombe, are under immediate threat. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued an emergency warning at approximately 3.05 pm on Wednesday, urging locals to 'act immediately to survive'.
The spokesperson emphasized that it is too late to leave, as the fire has already impacted evacuation routes, and leaving now would put lives in danger. Residents are advised to identify a room in their homes where they can shelter from the approaching fire, as the extreme heat will be deadly before the flames reach them. Up to 13 appliances are on the ground fighting the blaze, with at least one water bomber providing aerial assistance.
Dramatic footage from Main Roads captures the extent of the fire, showing thick black smoke covering parts of Roe Highway and several spot fires smoldering in the median strip. Drivers are warned of heavy smoke and are urged to stay alert and seek alternative routes to ensure their safety.
