A powerful plea for change has been made by Jesy Nelson, a former Little Mix singer, as she launches a petition and joins forces with the Mirror and SMA UK to advocate for a crucial heel prick test for all newborns. Jesy's personal journey with her twins, who were diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a devastating muscle-wasting disease, has inspired her to take action. She believes that a simple £5 blood test at birth could have prevented their diagnosis and changed their lives.
In an emotional statement, Jesy said, "I'm passionate about using my platform to raise awareness and support families affected by SMA. Partnering with organizations like the Mirror and SMA UK, who share this deep concern, makes this campaign even more meaningful."
But here's where it gets controversial... Current NHS plans for a pilot program propose testing only two-thirds of newborns in England, leaving the remaining third as a "control group" to compare outcomes. Experts have labeled this approach unethical, questioning the delay in potentially life-changing treatment.
Jesy's own experience highlights the importance of early diagnosis. Her twins were not diagnosed until six months of age, despite multiple visits to healthcare professionals. This delay can have severe consequences, as untreated SMA can lead to the need for wheelchairs, breathing assistance, and tube feeding.
The evidence speaks for itself. Three effective treatments available on the NHS can either correct the faulty gene or provide a replacement protein, acting as a cure if administered at birth. However, the UK National Screening Committee's decision in 2018 to exclude SMA from the newborn screening program has resulted in a delayed rollout, with full screening unlikely before 2031.
In contrast, NHS Scotland has recently decided to proceed with newborn screening for SMA, adding it to their routine heel prick test from spring. Experts argue that there is sufficient international evidence to justify immediate implementation of SMA screening for all newborns, as the US and most of Europe already do so.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting has acknowledged the need for action, promising to explore the feasibility of expanding the pilot to include all babies. When pressed on the matter, he stated, "We will always follow the evidence and recommendations, but I'm pushing the team to see if we can go further."
With the petition gaining momentum, having surpassed 40,000 signatures, the government is now required to respond. Jesy's campaign has the potential to drive real change and improve the lives of countless families affected by SMA.
