Kununurra's New Cotton Gin: A Record-Breaking Start and a Brighter Future for the Ord Valley
The Kimberley Cotton Gin in Kununurra has had a remarkable first season, processing over 81,000 bales of cotton. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of many individuals and organizations. The gin's opening in August 2025 marked a significant shift for the region's industry, bringing a new era of growth and opportunity.
Record-Breaking Growth
The region's growers planted an impressive 10,000 hectares of cotton, a significant increase from the previous year's 2,200 hectares. This surge in production is a direct result of the gin's ability to process cotton locally, eliminating the need for long-distance transportation.
Local Impact and Benefits
The Kimberley Cotton Company (KCC) played a pivotal role in establishing the gin, supported by Kimberley Agricultural Investment, Ord River District Cooperative, and Miriuwung Gajerrong Corporation. By keeping the entire process local, from growing to processing, the KCC has created a more sustainable and economically viable model for the region.
Overcoming Challenges
Second-generation Ord farmer Christian Bloecker, an investor in the KCC, shared his insights. Despite the challenges of getting the gin operational, he believes the effort will pay off. Bloecker emphasizes the local benefits, such as job creation and keeping money within the community.
Looking Ahead: Shortening the Crop
Bloecker's experience in cotton production has been transformative. He aims to grow shorter cotton this year, focusing on nutrition, irrigation, and supply chain management. This approach will contribute to the overall quality and success of the crop.
International Prices and Local Viability
While international cotton prices remain stagnant, with raw cotton lint prices around $500 per bale, Bloecker remains optimistic. He highlights the cyclical nature of the market and believes that even at these prices, the industry can thrive in the Kimberley region.
The Port of Wyndham: A Gateway to the World
Growers in the Ord Valley are eagerly awaiting the Port of Wyndham's First Point of Entry (FPOE) status, which will allow for direct international shipping. This development will further enhance the region's ability to export cotton and establish itself on the global market.
The Kimberley cotton industry is poised for growth, and with the gin's success and the port's upcoming infrastructure, the future looks bright for this thriving region.
