Londoners Furious Over 2-Month Tube Station Closure: Southgate Commuters Speak Out (2026)

Imagine stepping into a daily commute that suddenly turns into a frustrating ordeal—this is the reality for many London Underground passengers dealing with the frustrating two-and-a-half-month closure of Southgate station. The ongoing maintenance work on one of the escalators means that since January 5, this Piccadilly line station has been operating in ‘exit-only’ mode, leaving commuters scrambling to find alternative routes.

As a result of this closure, many travelers have been forced onto already overcrowded rush-hour buses to reach other Tube stations and continue their journeys. Transport for London (TfL) faced significant criticism from local residents when the closure was initially announced in early December. A notable response from the community included a petition signed by 1,300 individuals urging TfL to reconsider these plans.

Some commuters suggested a potential compromise: allowing the station to operate as ‘entry only’ during the morning rush and ‘exit only’ in the evening, which would permit necessary repairs while still accommodating travelers. Unfortunately, this proposal was not adopted by TfL, leading to increased travel times for many. For instance, Christopher Ellis, who commutes to Canary Wharf, now finds himself spending an additional 30 minutes on his journey. He expressed his concerns to MyLondon, saying, "It’s caused major disruption. My commute is already an hour, so it makes my journey an hour and a half, meaning I now spend three hours commuting each day. I get home late from work, so this just adds to my already long day. TfL should have listened to the commuters; there’s no problem using the fixed staircase to reach the platform, and they should have found a better solution to avoid this situation."

Omar Hammad, another daily bus commuter, also voiced his frustrations. He remarked that the prolonged closure makes it increasingly challenging to meet friends during the week, stating, "Getting to Central London is so much harder now that I have to take an extra bus. It’s absurd—they're closing the station for such an extended period just because the escalators aren’t operational. Most of us could easily use the stairs; a simple sign directing people to take the stairs if they are able would suffice."

Passengers affected by the Southgate station closure have resorted to taking the 121 bus to Oakwood or the 298 to Cockfosters. Those heading south to Central London are opting for the 298 or 382 buses to reach Arnos Grove and access the Piccadilly line.

This isn't the first time TfL has faced backlash over station closures. A similar situation occurred at Colindale station in the latter half of 2024, which sparked outrage due to the insufficient replacement bus services to other Northern line stations. In fact, videos circulating on social media depicted commuters dangerously squeezing onto the upper deck due to overcrowding, raising safety concerns. One pregnant passenger shared her distress with MyLondon, expressing worry about her baby's safety amid the chaotic bus boarding process.

Last month, Richard Jones, the TfL director responsible for asset performance delivery, issued an apology to passengers but did not provide a specific timeline for the complete reopening of Southgate station. He stated, "Essential maintenance work on one of the station’s escalators means that customers will not have access to Piccadilly Line services at Southgate during this period. This work is crucial for maintaining safety, enhancing reliability, and minimizing the chances of longer, unplanned closures. The remaining escalator will operate only upwards during this time. Customers are encouraged to check the TfL journey planner or the TfL Go app for alternative route options."

As commuters navigate these inconveniences, it raises an important question: How can public transport providers balance essential maintenance with the needs of the traveling public? Share your thoughts in the comments below—do you think TfL could have handled this situation differently?
