An unexpected closure at the Dartford Tunnel is causing significant disruption, leaving drivers stuck in lengthy queues!
Drivers navigating the M25 are currently experiencing considerable delays as they approach the Dartford Crossing. This is all due to emergency repairs that have necessitated the closure of one of the vital tunnels. National Highways has confirmed that the left-hand (west) tunnel has been shut down because a ventilation pipe in the roof has become dislodged.
Initially, traffic was briefly halted on the approach to allow for the safe cordoning off of the two affected lanes. Thankfully, drivers heading northbound on the A282/M25 have since been released and are now being guided through the right-hand tunnel while the closure remains in effect.
But here's where it gets frustrating... The situation has led to extensive traffic jams, with queues stretching over three miles! These backups are extending all the way back to junction 3 of the M25 anti-clockwise, near the Swanley Interchange. As a result, road users are facing delays of approximately one hour in the affected area.
And this is the part most people miss... It's currently unclear how long this tunnel closure will persist. Adding to the inconvenience, the J1a entry slip road has also been shut down.

The left-hand tunnel remains closed, and queues are extending beyond Junction 3 of the M25 anti-clockwise. Inrix reports severe delays and two lanes closed due to emergency tunnel repairs on the M25 Dartford Tunnel anti-clockwise from J1A (Dartford) to J31 (Lakeside / Purfleet). Congestion is significant, reaching back to J3 Swanley Interchange. The J1a entry slip and the left-hand tunnel are closed, while the right-hand tunnel remains open.
Around 1:30 PM: National Highways has provided an update, confirming the dislodged ventilation pipe in the left-hand tunnel of the Dartford Crossing as the reason for its closure. Traffic was temporarily held, and all northbound A282/M25 traffic is being rerouted into the north tunnel. Crews are on-site to determine if the pipe can be reattached or needs to be removed, with the duration of the closure still unknown.
