Contactless Myki Cards: Three Years in the Making, but Will They Finally Arrive Soon?
It's been almost three years since the Victorian government announced its intention to phase out physical myki cards, but the long-awaited contactless upgrade is finally entering the testing phase. While this is a significant step forward, many commuters are still left wondering when they will actually get to use the new technology.
The trial, which will involve over 100 government staff testing different bank cards and devices, is set to begin next month. After that, the system will be tested at two train stations. However, the timeline for the full rollout remains unclear.
Public Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams expressed her enthusiasm, saying, 'I do look forward to, in the not too distant future, sharing more about that time for rollout.' She also emphasized the complexity of the transition, stating, 'We will be able to give more insight into those timeframes in due course.'
Despite the government's efforts, some advocates argue that the process has been too slow. Daniel Bowen from the Public Transport Users Association points out that other cities like Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, and Canberra have already implemented tap-and-go systems, leaving Melbourne as one of the last cities in Australia to adopt this technology.
Bowen emphasizes the importance of these fare payment options for easy public transport usage, saying, 'The bottom line is, we need these fare payment options to make it easy to use public transport.' He also raises concerns about the potential confusion caused by the staged approach, urging the government to expedite the process.
Once the contactless system is rolled out, it will be exclusive to full-fare commuters, while concession holders and bus/tram users will still need to use physical myki cards. This means that the transition will take time, and commuters will need to adapt to the new system gradually.
