Nebraska Baseball's MLB Desert Classic: A Season Opener Like No Other
Nebraska baseball fans, rejoice! The beloved sport is back, and the Huskers are gearing up for an exciting season. But this year's opener is a unique one, as it marks the second straight year the team will begin their campaign away from home. The MLB Desert Classic in Scottsdale, Arizona, awaits on Friday night, setting the stage for a four-game spring training extravaganza.
The Huskers will face off against UConn, followed by a showdown with Northeastern on Saturday, a tilt against the Grand Canyon on Sunday, and a climactic match against Stanford on Monday. It's a challenging start, but one that promises valuable experience.
One player who's ready to make an impact is pitcher Ty Horn. Last year, Horn took a personal approach, focusing on self-improvement. However, he's now fully committed to the team's success, as he shares, 'I think I kind of figured that out toward the end of last year.'
The team's outdoor practice at Haymarket Park this week has been a game-changer, especially with the unusually warm February temperatures. Coach Will Bolt praises the move, stating, 'We’ve been over at Gordon Field over at Sandhills, which is a blessing. But to be able to be out here — we’re going to be playing here in less than a month — you see the ball fly, the dimensions of our own field, and the fact that we’re going to play on natural surfaces for the first three weeks of the season. Just getting back here, dirt and grass.'
The early practices have been instrumental in getting the team ready for the season's challenges. Bolt highlights the positive impact, saying, 'This week looks beautiful. Obviously, today’s a blessing in terms of how warm it is. That part of it, I’m excited to see the chemistry of the entire group playing together come about. These guys are about the right stuff. Their conversations are about the right things, and how they prepare is the right way.'
Among the newcomers is infielder Jett Buck, who's eager to test the team's mettle against external competition. Buck exclaims, 'We’re ready to go. We feel good. We look good. I’m excited to see what we’re able to do on the field.'
The Desert Classic is a strategic move, as all four games will be played at Major League Baseball spring training facilities. This provides Nebraska with a unique early-season challenge, testing their skills against a diverse range of opponents.
The first pitch against UConn is set for Friday night, and the excitement is palpable. Will the Huskers rise to the occasion? Stay tuned, as this season opener is one you won't want to miss!
