In a shocking display of law enforcement, police in Perth's northern suburbs have taken drastic action, destroying numerous electric scooters and off-road bikes and charging 25 young individuals. But is this heavy-handed approach justified?
The operation, named Moorhead, was initiated in response to community concerns about reckless and disruptive riding behavior. Authorities claim that riders, mostly minors, were engaging in dangerous activities, including throwing objects at people and vehicles, and sharing their exploits on social media.
But here's where it gets controversial: 36 e-rideables were confiscated, and charges were brought against 25 juveniles aged 11 to 16, as well as four adults, for traffic violations. The operation's reach extends beyond Joondalup, with police vowing to tackle the illegal use of e-rideables statewide.
Acting Inspector Scott Gillis expressed dismay at the social media footage, citing an incident where a 12-year-old was riding a scooter capable of speeds up to 80 km/h. He emphasized the potential dangers and urged parents to educate themselves and their children about the legal aspects of owning these devices.
"We will not tolerate anti-social behavior," Gillis stated firmly. This year, a ban on e-rideables for children under 16 will be implemented in public schools across WA, with police collaborating with schools to raise awareness.
And this is the part most people miss: Gillis suggested that some parents might be unaware of their children's activities. He urged parents to engage in open conversations with their kids about their riding habits and the legal requirements of e-rideables.
