A much-needed break for students! Punjab's education authorities have made a bold move to prioritize student health and well-being. But here's the twist: it's not without controversy.
The province's education minister, Rana Sikandar Hayat, has announced an extension of the winter break for all educational institutions, public and private, by one week. This decision was made in response to the extreme cold weather conditions and their potential impact on students' health.
Hayat revealed that a public survey played a crucial role in this decision. An overwhelming 87% of respondents supported the extension, with only 13% favoring an earlier return to school. The numbers speak for themselves: 154,178 votes for a longer break versus 24,829 votes for reopening on January 12.
However, this move wasn't without its share of drama. On January 9, Hayat had to put an end to rumors circulating about an extension, stating that schools and colleges were scheduled to reopen on January 12. A viral notification about an extension was even labeled as "fake" by the minister.
And this is where it gets interesting: the winter vacation in Punjab's educational institutions was initially set to end on January 11, 2026. So, this one-week extension means students will now return to their studies on January 19, 2026.
