Souths, known for their star-studded lineup, are gearing up for an exciting yet challenging 2026 season. With key players facing injuries and suspensions, they're turning to a rising star, Ashton Ward, to lead the way.
But here's where it gets controversial... Ward, who impressed during the pre-season, might need an NRL exemption to play in round one. Despite his impressive form, he currently sits outside the Rabbitohs' top 30 squad and the supplementary players.
Under NRL rules, an exemption is required for such a player to feature in first-grade before round 12. However, Souths officials are confident their request will be approved, given the team's current shortage of playmakers.
Just a year ago, Ward was signed on a bargain contract with the club. But his impressive performances, including a round 21 debut and six NRL games last season, earned him a new deal and the attention of champion halfbacks Cooper Cronk and Greg Alexander, who believe he's ready for a starting role.
And this is the part most people miss... Souths' left side might grab the headlines with Walker, Fifita, and Mitchell, but Ward has quietly built a strong combination with veteran Jack Wighton and winger Campbell Graham on the opposite edge.
"He's a great young kid. It can be daunting playing next to a dominant half like Cody, but he's growing and talking. He's organizing the team and pushing the forwards. It's been a pleasure working with him," Wighton said.
With Walker's fitness issues limiting his games and the failed Lewis Dodd experiment, Souths ended up with 11 different halves pairings last season. Now, they're hoping for a fresh start with a largely uninterrupted summer for their key players, despite Brandon Smith's calf strain keeping him out for a few games.
Forward Jai Arrow is on a modified program, while Alex Johnston and recruit Adam Elliott are expected to be fit for round 1. Walker, in particular, is feeling rejuvenated after his first full pre-season in years, rediscovering his running game and enjoying his footy without the limitations of past seasons.
"It's been disappointing feeling like a burden to the team when I was in and out due to injuries. But now, I'm putting in the work and starting well. I'm excited to play my style of footy again," Walker said.
