The Future of Mobile Banking: Zippay's Instant Payment Revolution (2026)

Imagine a world where transferring money is as easy as sending a text message. Sounds exciting, right? But here’s where it gets intriguing: the recent launch of a new mobile payment service, Zippay, has sparked discussions about its impact on established players like Revolut. The Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI) has stepped in to clarify that this innovative service is not intended to undermine Revolut’s position in the market.

Brian Hayes, the Chief Executive of BPFI, emphasized during his appearance on RTÉ Radio’s Today with David McCullagh show that Zippay, developed by Ireland’s top three banks, is merely an enhancement to existing banking services rather than a direct competitor to Revolut. Set to roll out in early 2026, Zippay will be accessible to customers of AIB, Bank of Ireland, and PTSB.

This service will function within the banks' current mobile banking applications and will be powered by PayTech Nexi. What makes Zippay particularly appealing is its simplicity—users can send, request, and even split payments instantly, all by using just the mobile phone numbers of their contacts who are also registered on the platform.

"This presents a significant opportunity for bank customers to conduct account-to-account cash transfers effortlessly, with the potential for businesses to adopt the service in the future," said Hayes. He believes that the investment made by the banks is a positive step forward and hinted at the possibility of other companies joining this initiative.

Nexi, which provides the necessary mobile number lookup service, is reportedly in talks with various entities to expand the reach of Zippay. "There’s a major movement across Europe towards creating a seamless instant payment experience. I foresee a shift towards a unified payment system over the next five to ten years, driven by the European Commission’s initiatives," Hayes noted.

As we delve into this evolving landscape of mobile payments, one can't help but wonder: Will Zippay truly reshape how we think about money transfers, or will it struggle to carve out its niche in a market already dominated by giants like Revolut?
