World Junior Record Holder Mizuki Hirai Has Arrived At Tennessee

The swimming world is abuzz with the arrival of Mizuki Hirai, the World Junior Record holder in the LCM girls 100 butterfly, at the University of Tennessee. Hirai, a talented swimmer from Japan, has joined the Lady Vols for the spring semester, marking a significant addition to the team. Her presence is particularly notable given her original schedule to join the program in the fall, which had been uncertain.

Hirai's arrival comes after a period of winter training, and the team is gearing up for the upcoming semester. Classes at Tennessee commence on Tuesday, January 20th, and the team is set to compete in their next scheduled meet on January 24th at the University of Georgia.

Hirai's impressive record includes a best time of 56.33 in the LCM 100 fly, which converts to an astonishing 49.48. This time places her second in the NCAA rankings this season, behind only Torri Huske of Stanford, who holds a record of 48.90. Only three other swimmers, Claire Curzan of Virginia, Miranda Grana of Indiana, and Emily Brown of Tennessee, have achieved sub-50 times this season.

Tennessee's top 100 flyer this season is Emily Brown, who swam a 52.10 at the CSCAA Dual Meet Challenge. While Sara Stotler, who led the team last season with a 51.50, has since graduated, Hirai's arrival is expected to significantly boost the team's performance.

The Lady Vols are currently ranked 9th in the Swimulator scoring for the 2026 NCAA Championships. The team's 200 medley relay is in 12th place, and the 400 medley relay is 11th. Brown's exceptional performance, with a 52.16 split on the fly leg, contributed to the team's fastest 400 medley relay this season. Notably, a time of 51.53 is required to score in the 100 fly.

This story highlights the impact of Hirai's arrival, showcasing her potential to elevate Tennessee's swimming program. The team's success in the upcoming season will be closely watched, with Hirai's record-breaking performance serving as a strong indicator of their potential achievements.
